The Monastrell grape – the queen of Barahonda
The Monastrell grape is perfectly adapted to the region of the Yecla appellation. This grape, with its compact bunches of small, round berries, appears in documents from the 15th century although it use in making wines in this region undoubtedly dates from much earlier.
In France this variety is known as Mourvedre (although it originates from our area) and it is used in the southern Rhone to beef up lighter varietals in a blend. However, only with conditions like those found in Yecla, where Mediterranean climate meets Continental, can Monastrell achieve its full potential.
Monastrell produces meaty, intensely coloured wines which are complex, aromatic and very well balanced.
The rest of our planting is composed of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot amongst other reds; for white wines we have Macabeo and Airen.
