Monastrell

Monastrell is the native variety of Yecla and the Region of Murcia. It is a variety that adapts perfectly to the climate and landscape of this area, as it withstands temperature fluctuations, with hot summers and long, cold winters.

Monastrell has compact clusters and small, round berries, first documented in the 15th century, though it has undoubtedly been used to make wine here for much longer. With its small, round berries, Monastrell produces wines that are rich, deeply colored, complex, and aromatic. Here in our region, with its unique climate and soil conditions, Monastrell expresses its full potential.

This makes our wines nearly unique worldwide, offering flavors quite unlike those of other wine regions.

Distinctive, personal wines.

This variety is known elsewhere as Mourvèdre or Mataró. One of Monastrell’s greatest advantages—aside from producing wines with unique, personal qualities—is that it is a variety that adapts poorly to other regions outside of Murcia. This gives us the rare ability to produce wines that are unlike those from any other wine region; in contrast, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo, and other well-known grapes are found across almost every wine-producing country. However, those looking for wines made from Monastrell must come to our region.

Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet, Tempranillo, Tintorera, and Petit Verdot (reds), and Verdejo, Macabeo, and Airén (whites) are the noble companions to our queen Monastrell in our vineyards.
